The first colonists in America stayed ... to the coastline, never penetrating far inland.

(a) close
(b) closely
(c) closer
(d) more closely

I believe (c) and (d) are 100 % incorrect. However, I am not sure whether adjective or adverb fits here.
Also, does this question have anything to do with my previous one? Or after the verb stay
should we always use adjective?

Many thanks..

(A) is probably the intended answer, although (c) is grammatically possible.
