Wish-sentence

Post by Rustamsher »

We had a discussion about the following sentence at the lesson the other day:

Is "I hope/wish that everyone stays happy." grammatically correct or not?

I think the present tense structure is correct with the verb hope, but not with the verb wish, but others thought differently. Also, our English teacher told us
"I wish everyone stay happy" is an example of the subjunctive so 'stay' should be in the infinite.
Is he right about this point?

Many thanks..

'Hope' is possible here, 'wish' not.

--> I wish everyone would stay happy.

I think you'll find the rules concerning this point are clearly set out in the ESL Learning Centre.
