In Korea, recently, making history textbook to be under the government administration to national textbook is main issue. I would like to hear your opinions about what is the right thing to do?
Thank you very much for raising such a nice topic to discuss. Honestly, I used to dislike reading history books (and also geography) when I was a school-aged student. I usually asked myself “what’s the point in reading about past era?”
Growing up, I changed my mind completely. Now I believe wholeheartedly that reading historic books is a great way to get wisdom and insight. We can learn a lot from noble figures lived in past. We may search all over the history and fail to find a compeer for some great people and noble figures lived in past era. Nevertheless, we can read about their life, biography, so on. Therefore, these written treasures which are called “history books” can be evidence for sizable achievements, valuable cultures, and great civilization of a nation and community.
A few days ago, I was looking for a scrap piece of paper among several papers and notes I had kept for several years ago. Sometimes, it’s enjoyable and interesting to review the old days by fumbling in old dust-covered documents after a long time. In the meantime, I ran into a piece of paper on which a great Iranian figure in history was described. It was about Cyprus the great.
Cyprus is known as "the founder of the Persian Achaemenian dynasty and the world's first intercontinental empire, is arguably the most important figure in Iranian history. Kurosh, as Persian-speakers would call him, has throughout the centuries been regarded by many as the ideal ruler. This universally favourable reputation is a result of Cyrus the Great's remarkable achievements." ‹1›
The last words of Cyprus the great to his sons and friends written on that piece of paper was really touchy for me. I was fascinated with his great thoughts, beliefs, personality, and traits. And I confess that we Iranians ourselves haven’t yet known and valued this great figure as he truly deserved. I feel like sharing that passage with you and my friends. You can also surf the net for “the Cyrus Cylinder” too.
I will submit a blog about his last words (testament) in next post. Please read it completely. Hope you’ll enjoy it.

P.S. I have heard that Korea has also had an enriched history with its great figures. I would like to read more about your great historic figures.
Hello, Hurieh.
First of all, thank you for your answer and recommendation. I am from the Republic of Korea and a university student.
Maybe, as you know, Korea had had much painful history under the Japanese imperialism. After the Second World War, Korea got independence from Japan and established the government of the Republic of Korea. Not much later, the Korean War occurred. With the help of other democratic states, we won the War, and then we have made the Miracle on the Han River after going through fighting history to get freedom. In modern and contemporary history, Korea has repeated painful history.
It is hard to explain all history briefly. The modern and contemporary history, however ,is the main controversial issue for national history textbook in current Korea.
Many people around the world would know Mohandas Gandhi(Mahatma Gandhi) with satyagraha(nonviolence). Korea also has those great leaders. Among them, I would like to introduce Kim Koo, Korean independence leader. He was a president of Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, and dreamed of Korean independence and ultimately national unification. Unfortunately, however, US army military government in Korea after the independence did not support Kim Koo, so in the interest of the Soviet Union and the United States, we divided into two countries, North Korea and the Republic of Korea.
Since then, he had tried to integrate our people, but he was assassinated. Conflict of the right side and left side is still the main controversial issue in Korea society.
If there is a chance, I would like to introduce Korean leaders more.
Considering the history of Korea, geographic factor like peninsula has affected to Korea history and culture. Of course, history and culture are very comprehensive and complex things. Yet, could you give me an opinion about history and culture? What will the main cause be for culture or history?
