Double words like 'on on'

Post by Marijn »

Some help please with this sentence since I'm not 100% sure if the double 'on on' is correct. If any other errors, please let me know too {-;

In the last few days there have been terrible earthquakes going on on the Gili islands.

It's a bit cumbersome but it's not grammatically wrong. The (phrasal) verb is "go on". It is followed by the preposition "on".

It could be rewritten as (for example):
Over the last few days on the Gili islands there have been terrible earthquakes going on.
"We are not wholly bad or good, who live our lives under Milk Wood :-| " — Dylan Thomas, Under Milk Wood
