I have a problem with explanation of using zero article.
'Are we heading for a future individual incapable of independent human thought?
The question is: why don't we need article A/THE before 'human thought'?

In this case "thought" is an uncountable and abstract noun. Of course "thought" can be countable (She is incapable of holding two competing thoughts in her head), but here it is uncountable, like air (People die if they don't breathe air).
