Receiving guests from afar

Post by SitangCampus »

To response to the national strategy of "Belt and Road Initiative", on April 10-19, 2019, Guangxi Vocational and Technical College of Communications (GVTCC) held a Chinese language and culture training class for Saint One Evening Female School of Thailand, and an evening of "March 3 on Lunar Calendar" for the young women to experience folk customs and cultures of Guangxi. Other interesting events were also conducted, opening the work of people connection between China and ASEAN countries by GVTCC.

Courses of "Elementary Chinese listening and speaking", "China's Traditional Cultures", "Shadow Boxing" were taught to Thai students, who also learnt paper-cutting, Zhuang people costume design, Kungfu in the campus of GVTCC. Majors of Roads and Bridges Engineering Department, Auto Engineering Department, Information Technology Department, Management Department showed the visitors their respective majors and strengths.

The young ladies were also taken to outings for opening their eyes in a foreign country. They joined the activities of bamboo pole jumping, embroidery ball throwing, iron ball rolling, lion dancing, brush writing, folk dancing and the guided tour to Confucius Temple, Guangxi Museum of Nationality, Nanning International Convention and Exhibition Center, Guangxi Museum of Science and Technology, and other landmarks of the city where GVTCC is located.

Btw, what is the Confucius Temple? What's the real connection with Confucius?

Thank you for your question.

As we all know, Confucius is a great thinker, philosopher and educator of China, he is also known as a sage of literature (or letters). A Confucius Temple is a holy site where his scriptures, works and stories are worshipped. Those who want to have great achievements in education or academic undertaking, such as to be enroled in a good college, to have a good mark in examinations, to write a good book that will pass to many generations, to win a Nobel Prize, would pay tribute to the temple on important days, such as New Year's Day, Mid-Autumn Festival...

Thank you for the information. You say "a Confucius Temple". Does that mean there are many such temples, not just one?

Yes, you are right, there are many such buildings in China and in other places around the world where there are Chinese people. It is like the case of churches or mosques for religions.

The one you saw in the picture above is a newly built one, but there was an old one that has been dismantled in the same area.

Confucius now serves as the goodwill ambassador for Chinese cultures, you will find many Confucius Institutes or Confucius Classrooms in many countries, where Chinese cultures and language are taught at the expense of the Chinese government. There must be some in England.
