Question Mark Confusion

Hello, I am confused about question mark use. I know it uses with WH question, but I saw Wh question without q's mark. If it is because of the indirect question. Then how it is used here.

1) I asked john where his purse was?
2) I couldn't tell him where I was.

I do not understand why the question mark is used in sentence 1 and why not in sentence 2. Please will you make it easy for me.

(Not really a grammar issue, but...) the first sentence is incorrectly written and requires a period, not a question mark.
