[didn't read][haven't read] or [hadn't read]

Post by ansonman »

I have made up the sentences below.

(1a) Jack says, "Welcome to our Weeknight Poetry Club. Have you had dinner yet?" I reply, "Yes, I did." He asks, "Have you ever read S.K.'s poems?" I reply, "I did this morning. I didn't read his works for a long time."

(1b) Jack says, "Welcome to our Weeknight Poetry Club. Have you had dinner yet?" I reply, "Yes, I did." He asks, "Have you ever read S.K.'s poems?" I reply, "I did this morning. I haven't read his works for a long time."

(1c) Jack says, "Welcome to our Weeknight Poetry Club. Have you had dinner yet?" I reply, "Yes, I did." He asks, "Have you ever read S.K.'s poems?" I reply, "I did this morning. I hadn't read his works for a long time."

Most of my non-native friends think "hadn't read" is the best one. They think both the simple past and the present perfect are wrong. I am not sure if "hadn't read" is the best tense. What is your opinion? Thank you for your help.

Yes, 1c makes the best sense. (1b is contextually absurd and 1a is strange/unnatural.)
