I have made up the sentences below.
(1a) Jack says, "Welcome to our Weeknight Poetry Club. Have you had dinner yet?" I reply, "Yes, I did." He asks, "Have you ever read S.K.'s poems?" I reply, "I did this morning. I didn't read his works for a long time."

(1c) Jack says, "Welcome to our Weeknight Poetry Club. Have you had dinner yet?" I reply, "Yes, I did." He asks, "Have you ever read S.K.'s poems?" I reply, "I did this morning. I hadn't read his works for a long time."
Most of my non-native friends think "hadn't read" is the best one. They think both the simple past and the present perfect are wrong. I am not sure if "hadn't read" is the best tense. What is your opinion? Thank you for your help.
[didn't read][haven't read] or [hadn't read]

Yes, 1c makes the best sense. (1b is contextually absurd and 1a is strange/unnatural.)
