Generally, BrE prefers the singular and AmE the plural (which is essentially another way of saying that, in AmE, the structure is putatively inverted, so that the complement - apples - becomes a kind of postposed subject. Cf. archaic/poetic
A knight brave and bold was he.
where the complement likewise precedes the subject.)
Thus, either is acceptable.
