Taking off and landing - nouns or verbs

Post by ecott » Sun Oct 20, 2019 1:12 pm

I'm studying to become an TEFL teacher. I'm teaching a vocab lesson tomorrow as part of the CELTA course.

The lesson is on airline related vocab.

For one of the activities Ss need to complete a gap-fill activity. I want to know if 'taking off' and 'landing' are nouns or verbs in this context -

'When a plane is going up in the sky it is taking off.'

'When a plane is coming down from the air it is landing.'

I thought they were nouns but they look like verbs in these sentences.

Any help would be much appreciated.

They are both verbs (take off being a phrasal verb).

They are also gerunds - verb forms that function as nouns and mean an action.
the take-off was aborted, the landing is completed
