is there a phrase sounds like sorry ending.

It sounds like the lecturer is saying https://youtu.be/qzn8Bz4rzLk?t=162
it was good in some sense it's making progress but it was also very humbling
and somebody sorry ending
first part of the sentence means that the system is not good enough, the second could be sorry for that, or some other meaning. nevertheless, "sorry ending" does not seem to be a common expression.

so, could someone please help to listen what exactly the lecturer is saying?

That's a tough one.

First of all, I'm pretty sure he says "it WAS making progress".

But for the ending I can't catch it.

couple of possibilities, but they don't make much sense (though the second one might if you listen to the earlier context):
1. ...story ending
2. and some with a sorry ending

Sorry I can't catch it. Maybe someone else can.

Thanks for your help. So, is "sorry ending" a common and clear expression? is it interchangeable with "not a happy ending"?

Yes. That’s fair to say
