rather than

Post by navit »

Are these sentences correct:

1) Last year, he'd rather that his daughter go to law school.

2) Last year, he'd rather that his daughter go to law school than study medicine.

3) Last year, he'd rather that his daughter should go to law school.
4) Last year, he'd rather that his daughter should go to law school than study medicine.

Gratefully,

All impossible! 'Would rather' refers exclusively to a present wish.

You could, however, say, e.g.

He'd rather that his daughter HAD GONE to law school last year (than studied medicine).

to express a present regret that she did not go to law school last year.
