Meaning

You can say this to emphasize that you really don't know something.

For example

  • "Where's your brother now?"
    "I have no idea. I haven't heard from him for weeks."

  • "What's she saying?"
    "I have no idea. I don't even know what language she's speaking."

Note:
Also "haven't got the foggiest idea" and "haven't got the faintest idea", as in "I haven't got the faintest idea what she meant by that."
