Meaning

You can say this if someone tells you that one of their relatives or friends has died.

For example

  • "My father passed away last night."
    "I'm sorry for your loss, Daniel. Is there anything I can do?"

  • "My friend Jodie just died."
    "I'm so sorry, Alice."

Note:
WARNING! You must not say "I'm sorry for your loss" to someone who's told you their friend or relative is sick or injured. It can only be said if a person has already died. This is very important!!
