Meaning: to violently suppress protesters or rioters

For example:

  • The police used guns, batons and tear gas to pacify the protesters.

  • Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed while being "pacified" by Israeli soldiers.

Note: "Pacify" and "pacification" are used to describe the violent suppression of protests or riots on the streets, in prisons, youth detention centres, immigration camps, occupied territories, etc.
