Meaning: socially-engaged, or wanting to help people or animals

For example:

  • Bleeding-heart animal lovers never think about the enjoyment we get from hunting wild animals.

  • If we elect bleeding-heart liberals, they'll give all our hard-earned tax dollars to losers and poor people!

Note: Mostly used by conservative people to make socially-engaged people with progressive views seem weak and sentimental. It's often seen in collocations like "bleeding-heart liberal", "bleeding-heart greenie" and "bleeding-heart socialist".
