Meaning: a dysphemism for those who accept the reality of man-made global warming

For example:

  • An oil industry lobbyist said, "Climate scientists only become warmists to get research money."

  • They call us "warmists" to make us sound like members of some weird cult.

Note: For advanced learners: Often used by politicians and lobbyists who are paid by the fossil fuel industry to deny the reality of global warming and to attack climate scientists. Climate science has shown that one of the main causes of global warming is the increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the burning of fossil fuels is one of the main causes of this increase. To reduce global warming, the burning of fossil fuels must be limited. This will also reduce profits for the fossil fuel industry, and to prevent this the industry invented dysphemisms like "warmist" to discredit climate scientists and others who are concerned about global warming.
