If you talk someone out of something, you persuade them not to do it.

For example

  • talk sb out of sth My uncle is a drug addict, and there's nothing I can say to talk him out of it. He says he's too old to stop now.

  • talk sb out of doing sth My family tried to talk me out of becoming a musician, but I wouldn't change my mind. I was determined to have a career in music.
