When we do something virtuous or good, we don't need any reward or compensation. The knowledge that we have done good is reward enough.
virtue (noun) = a quality that most people consider to be morally good or desirable in a person | reward (noun) = a gift or payment in return for something done
If you believe that "virtue is its own reward", after returning a €100 bill that you found to its owner you would expect
