For example

  • "Yo, Jerome! What's up bro?"

  • I was walking along the street when I heard this kid yell "Yo, Mikey! What's happenin' man?"

"Yo!" is used mostly by African-Americans, or by people who are influenced by African-American culture and style.


This is typically used in American English but may be used in other varieties of English too.
