to make very negative comments, to strongly criticise

For example

  • British newspapers nearly always rubbish local sports teams when they don't do well in international competitions.

  • Why does that guitarist in Oasis always rubbish other bands? I don't think I've ever heard him say anything nice about another band, except for The Beatles.

This is typically used in British English but may be used in other varieties of English too.
