This page is about the slang term wog

British English taboo!!!

Meaning: an offensive, derogatory term for a person whose skin colour is not white

For example:

  • I was very embarrassed when my grandfather asked my wife, "What part of the empire do those wogs next door come from?"

  • After my daughter told me that some of the white kids at her school had called her a wog, I went to see the school's principal.

Origin: This is a very offensive derogatory term only used by racists. It may have originated from "golliwog", meaning a soft doll with a black face and colourful clothes that was meant to resemble an African-American child.

Warning! This is very bad language. If you are a non-native speaker, you are advised not to use it. (You could cause resentment or anger if you use it inappropriately.)

Variety: This is typically used in British English but may be used in other varieties of English too.
