a serious argument or problem with someone

For example

  • Don was walking his dog when he had a run-in with someone he'd sold a used car to. The guy was angry about the problems he'd had with it.

  • One of my kids had a run-in with the law yesterday. He was stopped for speeding and then charged with driving an unregistered car.
