Doubled consonant before -ing

winning, spamming, formatting

listed by level

The trickiest part of making -ing forms from verbs is having to double consonants after a stressed short vowel like /e/, e.g. “get” changing to “getting” (not “geting” X). This doubling is needed because -ing after a single consonant can work like Magic E and change the vowel sound (as if “slim” changed to “sliming” instead of “slimming”). The doubled consonant is therefore needed to “block” the action of the -ing on short vowels. This page gives suitable examples of this for every language level from Elementary to Advanced, arranged alphabetically by the doubled letter.
