Re: Improving students' accents

It seems a little silly to me to work on R sounds with Spanish speakers, because their rolled Rs never cause communication problems and there are some native speaker accents (e.g. Scottish) which are similar. For French speakers, one of the biggest problems is dropping h. We've recently put up a lis...

Re: using taekwando to teach english

Assuming they are quite low level, basically what you are talking about is TPR (Total Physical Response). The first stage is you giving them instructions like "Right leg kick" and them following them (be sure not to do the action yourself every time, so that they actually have to listen). They can t...

That's a very wide topic. What meaning(s) of modals are you teaching them?

Re: Any courses on teaching legal English?

Here's a great blog post on the topic by a well respected blogger: http://cd-2006.blogspot.com/2009/08/teaching-legal-english.html I would add that if you take a certificate, MA or MA module in teaching Business English/ ESP, the techniques that you learn will be very suitable for more specialised c...

Re: English day trips

How old are the students and what country are you in? In general, the (difficult) trick is to give them something to do in the museum that uses the language that is there while improving their enjoyment of the museum (rather than killing their enjoyment, as all the tasks our teachers gave us on trip...

Re: How can you best Youtube to teach English online?

It can be a good idea, it depends on the clip, how you use it, and what you want to teach. Perhaps the simplest way is to use a clip just like a listening comprehension, with vocabulary pre-teach, comprehension questions etc. It is also possible to use clips without worrying about the dialogue, e.g....

Re: Explain English vocab in English?

There are many possible ways: - Mime it - Draw it - Show a picture of it (e.g. from Google images) - Show the real thing (e.g. by pointing at it in the classroom or bringing the object into class) - Explain what it means, e.g. by reading out a definition from a monolingual dictionary - Explain what ...

Re: Passive Form

Yes, you need "be" in "He is thought to be a wealthy man", in the same way as you need the present of "be" in "He is a wealthy man"- "He a wealthy man" is obviously wrong. I don't think it's very useful to tell students that this is the passive, as it has little in common with "Wine is grown in Sout...

What would you say her language level is? False beginner? Have you tried doing roleplays, e.g. shopping roleplays, using realia or picture flashcards? Pictures and mime are two good ways of getting away from reading and writing. You can easily make your own picture flashcards with words on the other...

Re: Career advancement

In terms of qualifications, the next step would seem to be a diploma, usually meaning the Trinity Diploma or Cambridge DELTA. More importantly, though, you just need to find a job in a better school, e.g. one which has a teacher training department.

Re: do you think a certification of ACTDEC would help

I think Pete summarized the situation nicely. I would add that centres joining some kind of organisation is usually a good sign that they at least want to improve quality and/ or be known as a quality provider, as long as that organisation is not actually just another part of the same company- which...
