Hello there,

I'm Lilo and I come from the Netherlands. This year I started my English teacher training course. For one of my subjects, I have to give a presentation about slang. My particular part of the presentation is why and when people use slang.

Could somebody maybe help me out a bit? What are the most common reasons people use slang? I've got 3 reasons till now: To sound cool, to speak a language parents don't understand, and because it's easier now we daily use the Internet. Are there any more important reasons for using slang or are these really the most important ones?

I hope someone could help me out a bit, thanks.

I could present here a very long list of reasons and examples, but it is very simple to find the answer to your question. Google the words "why use slang" , and you will have so many sites that can help you a lot. For example, I found this one: bu.edu/mfeldman/Slang/ - scroll down and read the explanations, and it is very good. But there are hundreds of others.
