Dear all,
Which sentence is correct between :
what sport did you participate in at school? and
what sport did you participate at school?
As I feel weird to have these both prepositions in and at closed together.
Please give me the correct answer and the citation as well.
Thanks a lot.

The first one is correct. If you don't like the two prepositions next to each other, you can put "in" at the beginning to make In what sport did you participate at school?, but the initial position of prepositions is not very common.
Sometimes you can even see sentences with more than two prepositions in a row. for example: who did you make out with down in that basement?

"Participate in" is what's called a phrasal verb: a verb that usually requires a certain preposition to be used grammatically. Sometimes these have meanings that aren't directly discernible from the two contributing parts. For example show off = purposely using ones skills in a way that attracts attention and praise (what does off have to do with pride?) or help out = giving someone aid (what does assistance have to do with out?) One of the trickiest parts of English!
