Grammar usage question

Unread post by argneka »

Hello,

If I were to have something delivered to me by a certain date. Which of the two grammar usages would be correct:

1) Please return by 7/12/2007

2) It needs to be received by 7/12/2007

Number 1 would appear that it is OK to have a package start it's return trip by 7/12/2007. Number 2 would appear that it needs to be recieved by 7/12/2007.

Sounds simple but I am confused.

Thanks,

Argneka

semantics...

Dear Argneka,

I believe this is more a semantics question. Logic would suggest differing perspectives: from the viewpoint of the sender or the recipient.

Do you want the product to leave the manufacturing facility on that date or do you want to be opening up your package at that time: shipping date or arrival date?

Sincerely,

Hi Argneka,

You understand the differences correctly, and so for your situation I would use option 2 with the small change: "Item must be received by 7/12/2007."

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Ben
