Any ideas how to begin your first lesson teaching a large class (say 60 stds) in order to capture their interest?

Dear Sparky,

For your very first class, you should automatically have their attention. They are wanting to know you and vice versa. Turn the tables on them and use what you have learned about psychology and teaching methodology to go ahead and perform your initial assessment of your students. Start off telling them about yourself while always asking them questions to ensure that you capture their attention. Find out about them while transisting to engaging activities which put them in front of the class, under stress, while you measure listening and reading comprehension. At the same time, you can evaulate class mechanics, watching how they either help or neglect supporting peer students in need. You should walk away from your first class having an overall idea about your students´foreign language proficiency and after reflecting, have a good idea of where to start for you next lesson. Utilize the first class more for yourself. Every class afterwards should be more geared towards your students. 8)
