Could anyone help me in finding information for a project I have to do on the above subject.

If both languages are similar (e.g. from Germanic or Romance origins), L2 can be a lot easier for the students to assimilate. Anyway that was just an example. I think that the mother tongue inference is not always good, it can lead to many errors which should be corrected at once.
