while / since

hello,there
Nice to meet you all!
My first question is
one concerning how to express the period of time from a particular point of the past.
What about the following sentences?
1. I have been waiting for the bus, and now it still hasn’t come!
2. The bus has never been here since I have been waiting for it, and now it still hasn’t come!
3. The bus has never been here while I have been waiting for it, and now it still hasn’t come!
4. The bus has never been here since I began waiting for it, and now it still hasn’t come!
5. The bus has never been here since you waited for it, and now it still hasn’t come!

Thank you in advance!!!

Dear Henz988,

I believe that you are translating directly from Chinese instead of thinking in English. As a foreign language learner, it is in your best interest to think in the target language, as this will avoid translation problems like this one.

"While" relates an unspecified duration of time in the past while "since" literally means "after that" and stress from a known point in the past until the present unless emphasizing up until a certain point in the past.

Interpret what you wish to say directly into the target language or at the very least, paraphrase what you wish to say while thinking in the target language to avoid mistakes. Stylistically, don't forget to remember the concept of logic. If you heed my advice, just review the semantics of "arrive" and then paraphrase or interpret what you wish to say.

Feel free to e-mail me or to visit me working hard in my on-line school.

Sincerely,

Eric Paul Monroe
