I would say, the light is the good thing which past, maybe "good memory". The verb "to stare at something" usually means fixing your eyes on one special thing and disregarding other things: To recall the good things in the past constantly.
So I if I say I would stare at the light, I can mean: "I want to see the good things in life again, I don't want to live in this misery. My recent life is awful, but my past life had been fine. So I claim myself to the past life." (a bit like Anathema)
so however, one deeper meaning of this poem could be a quotation by Konfucious: "Past love is only memory, future love a wish and a dream. Only in the present, here and now, we can really love."
