the usage of '' fish or fishes ?''

Post by minhthu »

Because my topic was locked in '' ESL Help Desk '', i want to share this with you here.
'' Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary '':
Fish ( C or U noun ) plural fish or fishes.
When is Fish or Fishes?
* '' Fish'' is the usual plural
Ex: '' I caught six fish in the river ''. This sentence is correct.
'' I caught six fishes in the river ''. It is not correct.
* '' Fishes '' is sometimes used to talk about diffrent types of fish.
Ex: In the Pacific we saw exotic fishes that you never see in Europe.

Actually you never HAVE to say "fishes"

"We saw many exotic fish" is just fine.

"Fishes" is usually used in a scientific context, and I believe the use of it elsewhere is gramatically incorrect >>
