Dear teacher,
The team is lost ,as was only to be expected.
Q : The "as-phrase" modifies the main sentence "The team is lost", doesn't it?

Yes, but it's a strange main clause: do you not mean 'the team lost'??

Sir, If I say "the team lose, as was only to be expected", is it odd?
