Pronoun inconsistency?

Post by Lone »

Dear Alan,

I found the following example in the dictionary:

Their father had always indulged her every whim.

I think it's wrong as it use 'their' and 'her' at the same time. So, the sentence should either be:
Her father had always indulged her every whim, or
Their father had always indulged their every whim.

Am I right?

It depends entirely on the referent. As the sentence stands, it is perfectly grammatical and meaningful.
