Website to improve writing skills
Hi there,
I sympathise with everyone having problems trying to write correctly in English, but you are not alone.
Most native speakers of English have trouble with spelling too.
If anyone is looking for specific writing practice to help with the IELTS exam, I have just set up a website for this purpose.
You can find the site at http://www.successatielts.com
It has lots of self-study online exercises, writing tips and practice exam questions with full answer key for instant feedback.
You can sample one module for FREE but if you want to access more there is a small fee I'm afriad.
Please take a look and let me know if you find it useful.
Best wishes,
Jenny Bedwell

Hello,
To make a negative sentence in English you need to use the auxiliary verb 'do'. So to make your second example correct it should be:
You do not have any new messages ...
Often, we contract 'do not' so that it becomes 'don't'.
Eg. You don't have any new messages ...
Your first example is correct because it uses 'no' to make the sentence negative. Therefore, 'don't' is not necessary.
You have no new messages (correct)
You don't have no new messages (incorrect)
Note, you can also 'haven't got' for this sentence. This form is more commonly used in spoken British English.
Eg You haven't got any new messages ...
Hope this helps!

Re: Tips for Writing
There's one tip I can give you. When you're writing, K.I.S.S.
K.I.S.S is a simple idea. It means keep it short and simple. If you're writing, don't focus too much on using big words. Your message will get lost in the transition and chances of you making a mistake will be bigger as well.
Also, you really have to practice. Even if you're just posting in forums and not typing an official document, write properly. This helps you develop the muscle memory that can be helpful when you're typing. For example, if you're used to capitalizing every start of a sentence, your hands' muscles will get used to it and will do it without you really thinking about it.

Re: Tips for Writing
I also do some article writing online as a job. It's not wrong to use the net as resources because a major part of writing is researching. Don't be afraid to use resources. However, plagiarism is a crime so make sure that you're just using your resources for research and not for copying.alexisj wrote:Thanks for sharing those cool tips guys.. That was really helpful as to the nature of my work where I face the net making blogs and posting articles, for in blogging there's really a need for bloggers to create content that's some like original. Even though some of the topics or I'd say information were all net sourced, there are usually times where you need to revised it, to come up with an originality. And in posting any topics, correct grammar should be considered.

If you're writing, make sure that spell checker is on when you're using MS Word. This helps you make sure that everything is done correctly. You'll also see errors that you didn't know was an error so it helps a lot.

If you're writing, it's good to follow these simple steps:
1. Make your point
2. Explain
3. Give examples
4. Go back to your point to close
This will help you make your piece short but concise.

A good tip is also to write with music in the background. It works for me if I'm listening to some slow jams music. It inspires me. Experiment first to see which genre of music works for you. It's just like working out!

Re: Tips for Writing
Write with emotions! A powerful piece should make the readers feel what you are feeling when you are writing your piece. Also, this will help you write better since you're writing from the heart as well as from the mind.

A good tip is to write what you know about so that the ideas will flow freely. If you have to write something that you're not familiar about, research! :)

Re: Tips for Writing
A great draft when writing essays or articles, it was taught by my English teacher .
Make a big circle at the centre of the paper then draw lines as to make it look like a hedgehog, then at the end of each line draw another smaller circle. Each smaller circle represents a paragraph or a perspective of the main theme, which you have written it at the centre of the big circle.

Re: Tips for Writing
Try to find incorrect spelled words in others' posts. Tell them to correct those mistakes or not is your choice, but practice to see mistakes in writing can help you a lot. Try to make your own way of writing. Goodluck.

Re: Tips for Writing
For writing, two things will not only help you but also will improve your writing skills.
1. Think & Think
2 Make Blue Print/Outline
First process the topic in your mind and decide the points which you are going to write. Then make an outline with the most important points. These points will be like the sub-headings which you can elaborate.
Happy Writing :)

Tip:writerone wrote:I learn by reading and writing. Each writer has their own writing style. If the reader can understand what is wrote then the writer did good since there is no perfect. But in time is it possible to (master) the art of writing? I only see the understanding of the writing by the subject and not the words precisely. Each word has it's own meaning within the piece. And I will never understand where the reader will interpret what they thought the writer was writing? Why write if the reader is going to interpret.
Most of the time the writer knows what they are writing about, and sometimes they don't, I have been there. writerone
It's very important for the writer to understand what (s)he is writing first so that the reader can easily get to the bottom of what the writer is really trying to express.

Here are a few writting tips:
1. Use exclamation marks (!) to show anger or surpise but don't use them in formal essays/writting.
2. Use semi colons (;) when linking together two clsoely related sentences, for example:
I have a big test tomorrow; I can't go out tonight.
3. Use colons (:) when you area bout to start a list or a qoutation.

Re: Tips for Writing
Check out any given paper and see the paragraphs that are short.
That is achieved to earn reading less difficult, as our brains participate in details improved if it has divided up into small balls. In educational writing, just about every paragraph develops one particular notion and frequently comprises many paragraphs. However in relaxed, regular composing, the fashion is not as formal and expressions might be as limited as one sentence and sometimes maybe a lone sentence.

As an ESL teacher, I completely agree with esra. Read voraciously. Read daily. Read anything you can lay your hands on. Reading exposes you to writing that is better than your own. It builds vocabulary and gives you the tools you need to improve your own writing. If there's one tip I wish all my students would take, this would be it.
