Meaning: to show disrespect to someone by saying or doing something insulting

For example:

  • Make sure you don't dis any of these guys or they could get really mad with you.

  • This guy said I dissed him, but I didn't show him any disrespect. I just didn't treat him like he was better than me.

Note: can also be spelled "diss"

Origin: Originally Jamaican slang and probably an abbreviation of "disrespect" or "dismiss".

Variety: This slang is typically used in American English but may be used in other varieties of English too.
