If you want to write a letter to your family, just write an informal one (better start with Dear Mom and Dad). There are various ways of writing a letter to family. And it depends on what you wish to write about. Ask your family's health, life...and talk about yourself such as some special issues you're having etc. Be sure that your letter is warm enough and full of love. Avoid hollow words. I found a letter to family, which is a poem, written by Charbonneau. Certainly it's just a sample as we don't write a poem but a letter to family. However, hope it might be of some help!

Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda,

We’ll soon be living on the water.
Life is good now. We’re not complaining.
But we’re sick and tired of work, it’s just too draining.

We saved our money and made investments.
We're quitting our jobs. Who needs that nonsense.
We’ll have a life of wind and water,
And fill our days with not a thought or any bother.

It may be stormy. It may be scary.
But most days should be light and airy
We’ll watch the sun set over oceans
And there's a chance we may get sick from all the motion.

We know you’re worried. And that’s OK too.
You’re our parents and we love you.
If after reading this, you don’t feel better
Say a prayer and kindly disregard this letter.
Nothing lasts forever...

If you are writing a letter to your family (as opposed to writing it for a member or members of your family who may not be familiar with English, for example), the form it would take would be something like this:

____________________________

July 16, 2005*

Dear Mom, Dad, Beth and Jack,**

Thanks for the cookies (money, letter, gold bullion, etc.). [or] I hope this finds you all well and healthy. There has been a lot going on in my life lately. For example, my friends and I saw a swarm of bees attacking a roving band of Martians just yesterday, and we had ice cream afterwards. (etc. etc. etc.)

Please write back soon.

All my love,

Herkimer Joe Joe, Jr.

You can add your address and telephone number for ease of reference at the bottom of your letter (in a business communication, your letterhead would ordinarily appear at the top but it can also be at the bottom of the page).

__________________
*The date is the first thing you should put on any piece of paper, even personal notes.

**The comma is important since this is a personal letter; by contrast, business letters take a colon after the salutation.
Hello Mudda, Hello Fadda
This was a enormously popular song, "Camp Granada" by comedian Alan Sherman (it was a parody a 19th century Italian opera by Amilcare Ponchielli (1834-1886): "Dance of the Hours" from "La Gioconda") in the U.S. back in the 1960s: http://www.jaxjewishcenter.com/camp-200 ... enada.html

Camp Granada by Alan Sherman

Hello Mudda, hello Fadda,
Here I am at Camp Granada.
Camp is very entertaining,
And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining.

I went hiking with Joe Spivy;
He developed poison ivy.
You remember Leonard Skinner;
He got ptomain poisoning last night after dinner.

All the counselors hate the waiters,
And the lake has alligators,
And the head coach wants no sissies,
So he reads to us from something called "Ulysses".

Now I don't want this should scare ya,
But my bunk mate has malaria.
You remember Jeffrey Hardy,
They're about to organize a searching party.

Take me home, oh Mudda, Fadda,
Take me home, I hate Granada!
Don't leave me in the forest,
where I might get eaten by a bear.

Take me home,
I promise I will not make noise,
Or mess the house with other boys.
Oh, please don't make me stay, I've been here one whole day.

Dearest Father, darling Mother,
How's my precious little brother?
Let me come home if you miss me,
I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me.

Wait a minute, it stopped hailing,
Guys are swimming, gals are sailing.
Playing baseball, gee that's betta,
Mudda, Fadda, kindly disregard this letter!
