The very first crystal trophy went to singer Roberta Flack in 1973, and since then more than thirty awards have been given out each year. In 2005, Mariah Carey leads the nominees with a total of four nominations, followed by Kelly Clarkson, 50 Cent, and Green Day who each garnered three nods for the awards.

In my opinion "garner three nods" means "they each earned three votes". Hope it can help.
