Yes, I agree with you . If you want to improve your writing skills you should read much, and learn the way the writer wrote.It is very neccessery for you to enlarge your vocabulary.You also should differentiate formal from informal writing, words only used for speaking and writing.

For example: The word: "so" = consequently = therefore = as the result...
However you only use "so" in speaking not in writing.

You can read some book teaching you the writing skills such as writing power,how to improve writing skill ...In these book you can learn the way of writing,organizing,drafting an essay, etc..
