nobody was | nobody were ?

Post by Tukanja »

Hiye :-)

1) Nobody except my aunt and uncle was willing to help me.

2) Nobody except my aunt and uncle were willing to help me.

3) Nobody, except my aunt and uncle, was willing to help me.

4. Nobody, except my aunt and uncle, were willing to help me.

Which of these are right ones?

1 is correct. 3 is also possible, as is:

Nobody (except my aunt and uncle) was willing to help me.
Nobody—except my aunt and uncle—was willing to help me.

Nobody is singular. Always. (Just like body is singular.)

Thanks
I thought the commas from the third one had been missed but, well.., they weren't.
