Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
I think the person who are younguer than 18 can not do anithing to enter to prision. It is not to much people who kills his parents with under 18 i t is not normaly. So I say that only in exceptual cases the boys or girls under 18 has to be in prision ofcourse they have to pay his crime but not in prision in comunity doing works or something else.

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
8) :P helloo. It is really dificult to decide if boys under 18 must can be in prision or not. first of all i am 16 so i say it is a very hard norm because a boy can not be very bad to enter to prision under 16.
the crime can do a boy who has under 18 it can not be very bad what can do a person who has under 18 stole in a shop it is not very bad there is not to much people who kills his parents with a katana when they are under 18. The norm can be reajustated for people who do very bads crime for example kill or rob a very big cuantity of money or something like that.
but now is a very hard norm to people who only has under 18

In Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran and Nigeria young criminals can be sentenced to death. In Russia person cannot be sent to prison if his/she's age is less 14.

Well I think the are some extreme cases which should be punished whith prison. However teenagers can be easily manipulated and they are pushed to steal or to kill by gangs´ adult leaders.
It´ s very complecated to judge those criminals because the parents also have a big part of responsabilty.

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
I think that before they were sent to prison , police should investigate about their conditions, why they've commited the crime, if the were on a gang or if their parents could have obliged them.
And when the police has done that, they should only be sent to prison if they've commited an important crime, like killing someone or kidnapping. If they have only stolen something or they've threaten someone, they should be taken to a reformatory, so in the future they wouldn't commit more important crimes.

I think that people under 18 should not be sent to prison if they have stole a shop or something like this, I think they should do communite service, because sometimes they are not doing it because they want, they do it because they are in a gang and they cannot go out of the gang.
In oder cases whenn they have killed someone they should go to a reformatory, because the ambient where they live, gets a bad influence in thems.

:| i belive that young people under 18 dont have to go to the prision, cause almost always they arent conscious of the real situation and normally when they do a serious crime is because they are in a gang,so someone older make to them do it.I think that the real solution isnt take them to prision, the real solution is acting before this things happen.

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
I'm far from being an expert about that, but as what I know the number of underage people comitting crimes is increasing.
Sure that something must be done about it. A measure propossed by some people entails in sending people under 18 who commit a crime to prison.
I think in some cases that should be done, but always bearing in mind the crime they've comitted, cause not all the crimes deserve a prison sentence.
I think, for example, shop lifting is not a serious crime. The shop lifter must return what he's stolen to the shop and pay a compensation (to the shop) for the comitted crime. Nevertheless, I think an underage person who has raped or kidnapped someone, should go to prison.
So the conclusion of this reply is: Young criminals (people under 18) can be sent to prison but only wheter they've comitted a serious crime, and the others who have comitted a less serious crime should be fined or punished with community services. Do you agree with me?

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
I think it depends on the situation. If it's heinous crime (murder, robbery, rape)he should be isolated from society.
If he is not punished he will become more bold in his actions.A person should understand that requital will come for all his acts. And it will serve as an example for other people.
But if a child steals bread because he is hungry than not he but the president of the country should be sent in prison.

Maybe. It deepens from the kind of crime. For example if a person under 18 kills someone (s)he need to bo in jail, but for any smaller crime I don`t think that they need to go in jail.
If you don`t like me remember it's mind over matter..I don't mind and you don't matter..

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
I think it shouldn't send the young criminals to the prison.
The prison environment in my country is complicated. They can grow abnormal in that environment.
And after prison time, they can be worse criminals...
I think that they should send young criminals in the special-school ( the school with a special system education and special teachers such as police, patient teacher, volunteers... )

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
Very serious crimes committed by young criminals should result in prison sentences.
The fact remains that there are exceptionally dangerous criminals who need punishment and treatment. However, the latter is not looked upon that significantly - the result often causes troubled minds to become exceedingly warped.
The prison service is often underfunded and the calibre of people working there is often unsatisfactory due to the level of provision that authorities give to the prison service.
There is a whole swave of young criminals who could have been rehabilitated by means of a balance between punishment and tretment in prisons. Getting the balance right would lead to the majority of young offenders being reintegrated into society. Alas the present system causes them to be stigmatised, hardened and embittered by the nature of the custodial sentence. Reoffence rates are disturbingly high.

Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
I think don't need..because that will make their mind set more worse than before..every people born with kindness..they become bad person because the environment and their parent doesn't care about them..I think the best solution is take them to "the kindness club" which is they can learn how to care people, learn how to live with kindness & useful for many people

Yes they should be sent to prison for commiting any sin or crime however the range/limit of punishment should vary from the elders/Adults.

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
I think it depends on what they have done. Teens still need to have an education but still they also need to pay for the crime they committed for them to learn from their mistakes. In a recent study of adolescents and teenagers, one group of scientists has found that by the age of 23, up to 41 percent of people have been imprisoned. These arrests could suggest an increase in criminal behavior, or a willingness of law enforcement to arrest younger people. Article source: Up to 41 percent of 23 year olds have been arrested at least once

I think an juvenile below age of 18 should not be sent to the prison except for conviction of murder and rape. Sentence for an juvenile should be focused on rehabilitation.

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
Hello teen counselor,Rickd wrote:I think to respond to this we need some clearer guidlines on what this underage child did.
Lets ask a few uncomftorble questions. Did the teen murder classmates parents, or maybe they raped a child younger then them. I am not taking either side at this point and i could be convinced to go either way.
I work as a youth councelor with teens and I see the real things that happen. So lets just say the teen raped another child. Jail Or Not?
I admire the fact that you are helping teens. =)
You asked a great question. It depends on the person who wants to help the teen rapist or not. I want to help him or her, so I will not send the teen to jail. If I were you, I would help them and/or refer them to other helpful, effective teen rapist facilities for repentance and rehabilitation. =)

I think instead of sending them to prison, it's better to put them in rehabilitation center. As punishment, they can do social works. Therefore, prison won't bring nightmare to their youth life.

hi,
that's my first post but I like the topic
anyway
I don't think young criminals should be sent to prison
because it'll increase criminal thinking in them
they must sent to psychologist to treat them and understand why they do crime
of course everyone have a reason to do crime especially the youth
so we must treat them before punish them
that's my opinion :)
and thanks for the topic

I think punishment of young criminals plays a key role in reducing crime rates.Knowing that there is a swift action against committing crimes, makes them to think carefully before engaging themselves in any unlawful act .on the other hands it is not the only solution governments should rise the awareness of youngsters through media and social services.

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
I believe the young people who commit the crime , themselves are people who has been suffer or may have been abused by their guardian .
Another reason that may have effect on the criminals related to the gens.
So they are not the only people who should be blamed for that. By considering these parameters
the society should provide a way to keep them in line.
so instead of prison we should provide correction center that they give them proper education to help them to come back to the society.

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
Juvenile justice must improve to a more sensible implantation, where nowadays crime was acted by a child or teenager. Here in our country ‘Philippines’ common crime suspect was a child. The laws here are always siding on them regardless of what heinous crime they’ve done. We know that giving them a second chance is a moral act, but if you will check the crime tally from the previous year, and compare it today- it’s shocking to know that it increases more.
I’m not saying that punishing a child like what they normally did to an older or more mature (a person who knows what they’re doing), are exactly what our government do to any crime offender regardless on their age. However, I still see some changes that our government did these past few years of the Aquino regimen. I hope that they will come up with a refurbished law that will teach these child to learn what they’ve have done.

Yes, young criminals should go to prison for their crimes.
Yes, I believe the young criminals should go to the prison. At first, I don not like child, who were crime. I am 18 years now, So I know, when you were 12-16 years old. Your mind were already group enough, you can thinking by your own. If I choose be a bad person, I will do it. So lot of people said:" They are just child, they do not know that is violate the law." For that, I just want to say BULLSHIT! If your child have a crime, it is your responsibility, it's your are not teaching well. "They are just a child?" lmao. That is just excuse. If the child crime and their parents fix it for them. They will never know what is right what is wrong. "OMG you are monster!". yes, i am. If i have a child who crime or steal some thing, i will bit them like hell. I will let them know that is wrong. So, those people who said"They are just child". ~ YOU ALL!!!

Citizens under the age of 18 are not yet fully competent, so they should not be sent to prison, but there are cases in which it is better to come up with a harsher punishment. it all depends on the individual
As far as I was concerned Can't wait to see whatever movie they're filming in London right now.

Re: Should young criminals (under 18) be sent to prison?
Hello,
This is my first post, but I find the topic interesting.
I don't believe young criminals should be sent to prison. It could lead to further criminal behavior. Instead, they should be sent to psychologists for treatment and to understand why they commit crimes. Everyone, especially young people, has reasons behind their actions. So, it's important to address these issues before resorting to punishment.
That's just my opinion. Thanks for bringing up this topic.

Though it depends on the age of the person. I believe anyone over the age of 14-15 has the capacity to understand their actions fully.
