This sentence was presented to me.
"The phone rang AS I got home."
"The phone rang WHEN I got home."
Is there any discernible difference between the two and if so any explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Both possible, with minimal semantic difference in this case, although 'as' tends to suggest a more contemporaneous combination of events.
