Are we really?

Post by trada »

Dear Masters of the English language,

Earlier today, I saw following sentence:
Networking is like sex.
We love doing it, talking about it, watching it, and we all believe we are great at it.
Are we really?
I'm not a native speaker, nor am I a fully proficient in English, but the
Are we really?
part sounds somehow strange to me. Maybe it's because I have usually heard the question in the form
Are we really that ... ?
Can you confirm/deny my suspicion?

The question "Are we really?" asks the question "Are we really great at it?"

Is that what the question really wants to say, or does it want to say:

"Do we really love doing it, talking about it, and watching it; and do we really all believe we are great at it?"

There is some ambiguity and perhaps that is why you feel uneasy.
