Yeah I get that part but is putting 'an' before 'alive' correct? It just sounds weird, Even if 'alive' does start with a vowel.

No, it's not grammatically wrong ("a alive person" WOULD be wrong) but the whole expression is not idiomatic. We might prefer "killing a living person is wrong".

"Alive" is seldom used before the noun. It's more often used as in:
There is no hope of finding anyone alive.
He comes alive when he drinks.
