Conditional or Not

I was asked a question today and I went blank. We were reviewing Simple past. I asked the student: 'What did you do on your last birthday?' He didn't remember so he responded - If I was with my family then I went to dinner but If I wasn't with them then I went to work. Is this construction correct?

Yes, fine and idiomatic

Another possibility:

If I was with my family then I would have gone to dinner but if I wasn't with them then I would have gone to work.

or perhaps better:

If I was with my family I would have had dinner but if I wasn't with them I would have gone to work.
