First assignment to ESL classroom

Unread post by Sagunt »

I just got hired on to teach ESL to newcomers at the highschool. I haven't even had a chance to look at the curriculum yet.

Classes start on the 21 of August. I would like to start planning now, but can't get hold of the materials.

My questions are these:
What should I expect?
How can I prepare myself for a successful year?
How much am I interdependent on the other teachers for my students' success?
How do I optimize my relationship with the other teachers to ensure linguistic progress?

Cheers,
eric

Hi Eric,

My answers are:

1. Whatever.
2. Do what you will, the first steps in the faculty will be wrong, but there are chances you won't notice it.
3. You can't prepare yourself for a whole year. Plan a chain of, say, 5 lessons and correct your plans on your way.
4. A lot. For good or bad.
5. Depends.

Good luck,

GiddyGad
