looking for a good research topic

Unread post by mirra »

Dear colleagues, I'm Mirra and I teach ESL to senoir students. Now I'm looking for a good research topic about jobs, professions, maybe vocational guidance, but from a linguistic point. Last year we did a research on "fancy" job titles. I've been thinking about researching male/female variants of job titles - is there anything to research there? I cannot spot a really interesting research subject, though. And the exact topic - what could we choose? I will appreciate any help. Could anyone tip me about a good linguistic topic of research in the field of jobs, professions, vocational guidance, that sort of thing? Maybe some linguistic discrepancies which you think are interesting, or even funny, but which are also researchable for 15-17-year-olds? It's going to be just a study project, but it has to be like a small independent research, so there has to be a small, but real, unresearched problem. Maybe there's something which is too small for serious linguists to work on, but which might be used as a good learning task? Please send me some variants - as native speakers you might really come up with something interesting, original and fresh which I myself would never even think of! TIA - Mirra

Hi,

It sounds like an interesting project. I can't think of anything but some of these links may provide inspiration. This article about gender is interesting:

As is this on weird job titles:
